Elizabeth Taylor's famous pearl sells for $11.84m at NYC auction

An update on this story.

An amazing piece and an amazing price!
A HUGE pearl once worn by kings and queens and last owned by Hollywood siren Elizabeth Taylor sold for a record $11.84 million at auction in New York today.
"La Peregrina", pictured above, depicted in artworks over the centuries and coveted by crowned heads of Europe, was bought for Taylor by her husband Richard Burton in 1969.
The pearl, suspended from a Cartier necklace, had been estimated to sell by Christie's for $2-3 million but the figure shot up in fierce bidding, reaching the highest price for any pearl jewellery at auction.

Christie's was selling Taylor's legendary jewellery and fashion collections, the so-called "Crown Jewels of Hollywood".

The actress, who died in March at the age of 79, had seven husbands during her glamorous life, countless admirers and a passion for jewellery.

The Herald Sun. And lots more here.

The 33.19-carat diamond ring given to Taylor by the actor she married twice, sold for $US8.8 million.

The pearl, diamond and ruby necklace, known as "La Peregrina", purchased at auction for $US37,000 in 1969 by Burton for Taylor reached the world record price of $US11,842,500.
It was estimated to sell for $US2 million to $US3 million.

The price surpassed the previous auction record for a pearl, set in 2007 at Christie's auction house in New York City with the sale of The Baroda Pearls for $US7,096,000.

The ring, estimated to sell for $US2.5 million to $US3.5 million, was included in a collection of Taylor's necklaces, earrings, pendants and rings and other gems that went on sale Tuesday night at Christie's in New York. The ring was purchased by a private buyer from Asia, according to a Christie's spokesman.

Taylor, a screen goddess who also starred in classics such as Giant, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, died in Los Angeles in March at age 79.

A jewellery lover, she had pieces from some of the most famous names in the jewelry world, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chopard, in her collection.

Other sales of Taylor's art, clothing and memorabilia will be held later in the week. An online-only sale of some items runs until Saturday.

Part of the proceeds will go to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which she established in 1991 to help people living with AIDS.

Taylor's collection of impressionist and modern art is scheduled to go on sale at Christie's in London in February.

Pirates of the Caribbean - Incredible Piano Solo of Jarrod Radnich and the Technology He Uses

I really like this piece of music, and enjoyed the latest "Pirate" movie!

Unsurprisingly, it was directed by Rob Marshall who also directed "Chicago"
, a superbly directed movie.

I thought the third installment was very ordinary, but this one seems to have made up for it.

Jarrod Radnich
is inspirational with this piece.

It had achieved over 23 million hits, and counting, on You Tube when I first posted this.

I think he deserves it! Now that Jarrod Radnich has his own You Tube channel the numbers will be different.

His performances are part of a new featured attraction at Disneyland's "Dream Home Of The Future" in Tomorrowland.

Video production credits: Paul Anderson, Tel Stewart, and Craig Knudsen. Piano arrangement and performance: Jarrod Radnich.

Sheet music for this and other arrangements are available through Radnich's website:

http://www.jarrodradnich.com/store.html.

Jarrod Radnich, nationally noted composer and pianist of "Virtuosic Piano Solo Series" personally instructed Miss South Dakota, Anna Simpson, on one of his piano compositions.

The composition, Pirates of the Caribbean, was then performed by Simpson at the Miss America Pageant.

He did the training with a distance of thousands of miles between them!

NBC's nationally-broadcast Today Show recently covered this story (4/27/2012) and featured the PianoDisc piano player system and Zenph Sound Innovation's Internet MIDI software used to link the pianos. Amazing!

The Last of the Mohicans: My Favourite Movie

I have watched “The Last of the Mohicans” 46 times – and I am sure I will watch it again.

On that basis alone I have to give it the title of “My Favourite Movie”.
The historical movie is one of my favourite genres. I also like old musicals!

This is not a happy movie so it doesn’t make me happy to watch it but it is a great experience.

In hindsight, and after reading much, it gives the viewer an idea of the fate awaiting Native Americans and many of us know how that turned out.

If you don’t know, trying reading “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee”.

One of the first movies ever to portray Native Americans in a positive way was “Dances With Wolves” which is also a favourite of mine but I have not watched it nearly as often.
It was released before “The Last of the Mohicans”.

Why do I like this movie?

It has everything: great story, great characters – even the villains, drama, betrayal, romance, action, educational elements, great actors, excellent production values and a superb soundtrack which I still listen to after all these years.

Not to mention eye candy for the ladies!

Cast :
One very memorable scene between Cora and Major Duncan has this line.

She tells him after she has rejected his proposal to her:
“I would rather make the gravest of mistakes than surrender my own judgment”.
Think about that for a minute. It is quite profound.
Is it saying listen to your higher self?

The clip above is mine - just a way of expressing my appreciation.

Update: The Last of the Mohicans: Director's Definitive Cut (Blu-ray). Now available.

A Collection Of Late Actress Elizabeth Taylor's Jewellery Will Be Auctioned Online

It seems fitting that one of the most beautiful women who has ever lived should have possessed some of the most beautiful jewellery ever created.

Jewellery must have given her a lot of joy and happiness.
Dame Elizabeth Taylor RIP.

SOME of the world's most precious stones graced her neckline, and now the late actress Elizabeth Taylor's jewellery collection is being auctioned online.
The collection, known as the "Crown Jewels of Hollywood," will be split in two, with nearly 1,000 items selling only online, Christie's auctioneers said.

The main auction of the late Hollywood mega-star's glamorous belongings is set for December 13-16, featuring gifts to Taylor from the likes of Michael Jackson and her two-time husband actor Richard Burton.

However, Christie's said that starting December 3 it would run a separate, two-week-long Internet sale of 950 items such as jewelry and accessories.

Items will include clothing from Oscar de la Renta and Hermes, 22 handbags by Dior and Valentino, and accessories from Cartier, Louis Vuitton and other top fashion brands.

Much of the sale will focus on jewels, including Art Deco-era pieces, strings of diamonds and also day-to-day adornments such as a pair of Chanel ear clips estimated to sell for just $100.
Christie's said the extra sale would "ensure the full breadth of the collection is accessible to collectors worldwide." Although buyers can bid online during Christie's live auctions, this was to be the first time the auction house had run a parallel online-only auction.
